EPISODE ONE
Daniel Marrack returns to the Cornish surfing town of Polnarren after a 20 year absence, having bought a run down building which he is turning into a new surf shop and café. His son, Brae, a super fit surfer in his late teens, is determined to make the most of their new business venture. Dan’s 16-year-old daughter, Abi, who initially decided she wanted to stay in London, has also been drawn towards a new life by the sea. Having recently lost their mother, Dan is determined that Brae and Abi should have a fresh start and a better life.
But the Marracks’ return does not go down well in Polnarren, as old rivalries are immediately re-ignited. Mark Penwarden, Dan’s ex business partner, is outraged that Dan has the audacity to come back to the town after having once had an affair with his wife Susan. Dan was also supposedly the cause of a boating accident which killed three fisherman 20 years ago. And in a town like Polnarren, bitter memories aren’t easily forgotten and It doesn’t take long before Dan is sharply reminded of events from the past. Susan still has feelings for him but she too has her own reasons for not wanting to be reminded of their affair. She urges Dan to leave Polnarren for good.
Walking into Polnarren, Abi is offered a lift from Mark and Susan Penwarden’s son Jimmy. Both are gorgeous enough to be confident flirts and there is an instant attraction between them. Later that evening, Abi turns heads at a beach party Jimmy has invited her to. Jimmy – used to getting any girl he sets his sights on - has completely fallen for the new girl in town. The feeling is clearly mutual but Jimmy must hold back because he’s made a pact with his best friend Charlie Morgan that the next girl to come to town is his. Much to his lovesick friend Narinder Gurai’s frustration, Charlie thinks Abi is irresistible and tries his hardest to turn on the charm, leaving Jimmy frustrated at the bad timing of his promise.
Charlie’s eagerness to impress Abi backfires when he mistakenly picks a fight with Brae, not realising that he is her brother. The night ends with Brae and Jimmy in a fight, witnessed by Dan, Mark and Susan. The next generation of Marracks and Penwardens look set to be arch enemies just like their parents. Mark tells Dan to leave but this only makes Dan more determined to stand his ground. With all eyes on the Marracks, Dan decides to stay in Polnarren.
EPISODE TWO
Mark makes it clear to Susan that he will do whatever it takes to get Dan out of their life, even if it means telling him a deeper secret Dan doesn’t know about. This terrifies Susan. While the Marracks try to settle in and Jimmy and Brae shake hands, Mark’s threats are realised when Dan finds graffiti on the surf café. When Dan finds that his van has also been vandalised with newspaper cuttings of the boat accident he was accused of years ago, the pressure from Mark is made crystal clear. Dan is finally forced to explain his past with the Penwardens, Abi and Brae are angry with him for not standing up for himself. Susan explains to her daughter, Grace, that Mark is still the love of her life even though she was once with Dan.
Jackie Hughes and Ian Brenton are also newcomers to Polnarren. They left the city behind in order to make a better life for themselves but their dream is becoming hard to realise. Fin Morgan, Charlie’s Grandfather, is the owner of the caravan park where Ian and Jackie work. Fin is worried about the future of the site and is finding it hard to make ends meet. Ian knows more than Jackie but is determined not to burst her bubble until he has come up with a solution to their financial problems. While Ian struggles to sort things out for the caravan park, Jackie has been offered a job at the Marrack’s surf café.
Abi’s feelings for Jimmy grow. Jimmy also wants to be with Abi but has two dilemmas: not only should he keep his pact with Charlie but his father also wants him to stay away from the Marracks. If he were to put a step wrong, his trouble-loving sister Grace would tell tales. Grace is a daddy’s girl and therefore takes Mark’s anti-Marrack stance. She also has her eye on Ian, much to his discomfort.
Narinder, who knows what it’s like to be a newcomer in Polnarren, lives with Ivy Trehearne, landlady of The Wrecker’s Arms. Abi and her become instant friends and Narinder tells her she has run away from her family, who wanted her to have an arranged marriage.
Grace persists in her flirtation with Ian, who is trying to convince Mark to help Fin out of a financial crisis by investing in the caravan park. Mark laughs off Ian’s business proposition despite being interested in buying the land for re-development. Susan desperately begs Dan to not take on Mark, leaving him to wonder what secret she is hiding.
EPISODE THREE
Susan fears what Mark will do in his continued determination to see the back of Dan. Paying local youths to set fire to his van, Mark revels in reminding the Marracks that they are still unwelcome in Polnarren. A furious Dan confronts Mark with the truth about the boat accident – that he always suspected he had taken the blame for Mark’s mistake - but is told to stay away from buried secrets in case he discovers something he’d prefer had been kept in the past.
Susan finds a friend in new resident Angela Cole. She confides her worries to Angela in The Wrecker’s Arms, but their brief heart to heart ends abruptly when both Mark and Dan enter the pub. Mark forces Susan to tell Dan that she never loved him, which leaves Dan confused and hurt.
Jimmy, forced to stick to his pact with Charlie, purposefully makes a bad impression with Abi. Seizing this as an opportunity to be a shoulder to cry on and emboldened by Jimmy’s words of wisdom, Charlie goes to comfort her. In an attempt to get back at Jimmy, Abi asks a delighted Charlie to the surf shop opening, much to Narinder’s sadness and Jimmy’s disguised envy.
Ian confesses to Fin that he approached Mark about the caravan park. Fin continues to struggle with the park but manages to resist Mark’s offer to buy him out. Meanwhile, Jackie accepts the job at the surf café, which emasculates Ian but pleases Brae as he clearly fancies her.
Despite feeling hurt by Susan’s denial of ever loving him, Dan decides to celebrate his new venture with his family while a lonely Mark contemplates his marriage and a sobbing Susan scrabbles at a spot in the sand, seemingly desperate to find something once buried there.
EPISODE FOUR
The Marracks prepare for the opening party of the surf shop café, determined to give their family venture a celebratory beginning. Mark and Susan decide whether to go while Grace has already dressed up for the occasion and is upset when Ian rejects her advances.
Concerns about the future of the caravan park hang over Ian when Fin says he’s considering Mark’s offer. The news that Jackie has taken the job at the surf shop café further upsets Ian. A romantic dinner together appeases his concerns.
An embittered Grace makes it clear to Charlie that Abi doesn’t care for him as Jimmy is the one she wants, so Charlie magnanimously tells his best mate that he should go after Abi.
With all eyes on Mark and Susan when they arrive at the party, Dan makes the best of the situation and toasts new beginnings. The party is in full swing when disaster strikes at the caravan park. Distraught at seeing Ian kissing Jackie through their caravan window, Grace had dropped a lit cigarette onto spilt lighter fluid. Brae runs into the flames and manages to rescue both Ian and Jackie from the burning caravan.
EPISODE FIVE
While Ian lies in hospital unconscious, Fin surveys the damage inflicted on his business. Meanwhile, Grace is in a state of panic about the fire she caused and tells Mark the truth about what happened. As the community come together to support Jackie and clean up the Caravan Park, Mark and Grace wait with anticipation to hear whether Ian will live.
Jackie arrives with the news that Ian will survive. Among the debris of the fire, the events of the party last night seem far away, even though it was the first time Dan and Susan had managed to snatch a few moments together to remember old times. Jimmy is delighted that he is free to ask Abi on a date until Grace finds out and tells Mark, who forbids him to ever go out with a Marrack.
Susan begs Jimmy to listen to his father while Abi waits for Jimmy to arrive. Eventually deciding that he’s not going to stand Abi up, Jimmy arrives too late to find her gone. Jimmy searches for Abi but instead witnesses his mum in a secret encounter with Dan.
EPISODE SIX
Abi can’t help but forgive Jimmy when he apologises for his lateness, and tells her dad that she has more than just a crush on her new flirtation. With Dan’s approval, Abi spends more time with an equally smitten Jimmy, despite Grace’s attempts to disrupt their plans.
Susan is lost for words when Jimmy tells her that he saw her kissing Dan on the beach. Meanwhile, Mark persists with Fin and his offer on the caravan park.
Ian returns home from hospital to a distracted Jackie. Brae does his best to cheer Jackie up but Ian isn’t impressed when he finds them spending time alone together, their attraction obvious.
When Dan hears that Susan and Mark moved to France when she was pregnant with Jimmy, he becomes suspicious. He asks around and Fin and Ivy disclose more information about the Penwarden’s hasty departure abroad and Jimmy’s birth date. Dan frantically tries to find Abi while she and Jimmy enjoy a romantic date. Before Dan can stop them, he sees his daughter and possible son speed away on Jimmy’s motorbike.
EPISODE SEVEN
After a restless night, Dan is relieved when Abi arrives home from her evening with Jimmy. Dan tries to stall Abi seeing him again until he can find out the truth about Jimmy from Susan.
Susan tells Angela that she fears her family is falling apart. She’s worried that Mark is keeping something from her. Meanwhile, Mark pays Dan a visit to make his standpoint clear about their kids - he doesn’t want them getting together.
Narinder organises a lock-in at the Wreckers Arms when Ivy goes on a date with Fin. Envious of all the attention Abi is getting, Narinder dresses up to impress Charlie and is upset when Charlie tells her that he prefers the less noticeable Narinder.
Abi and Jimmy get romantic at the party, but Jimmy is distracted by Dan’s sudden strange behaviour and leaves early. Meanwhile, Dan has found Susan alone at the Penwarden house. He wants her to tell him the truth about Jimmy but then Mark walks in and a confrontation ensues. Jimmy arrives home to overhear Dan asking Susan and Mark if Jimmy is his son.
EPISODE EIGHT
Jimmy is stunned when he overhears Dan’s shocking confrontation with his parents. Jimmy leaves, unseen, trying to make sense of Dan’s accusation. Mark and Susan tell Dan he’s got it all wrong but he doesn’t believe them and wants proof.
Meanwhile, Abi is excited about spending a special night with Jimmy and prepares the beach hut for seduction. And Narinder finally tells Charlie exactly what she thinks of him - that he’s a selfish idiot she’s not prepared to be friends with anymore. A surprised and drunken Charlie escapes Narinder’s criticism by joining Ian and Jackie in the surf shop. They are enjoying a quiet beer together and aren’t thrilled by the company.
Grace cottons on to Abi and Jimmy’s planned romantic encounter and makes her way to the beach hut as a drunken Charlie also stumbles there. Jimmy, still thinking that Dan might be his father, dumps a distraught Abi. Charlie arrives to find Abi alone and tries to comfort her but one thing leads to another and Grace’s peeping eyes see everything.
Jimmy doesn’t know what to think when Susan and Mark tell him that Dan has got it all wrong. But despite the tension in the Penwarden house, Mark finds time to call his mystery lover. It’s Angela.
EPISODE NINE
Dan waits anxiously for the results of the paternity test which will prove whether Jimmy is his son. Mark is smug when the phone call comes confirming that Jimmy is his son after all.
Jimmy visits Abi to explain his outburst. Dan tells him that he will not get in the way of his and Abi’s relationship but she doesn’t know anything about the paternity test and that is the way he wants to keep it. Abi is still upset with Jimmy and asks him to leave but doesn’t have the courage to tell him that she slept with Charlie. Shortly after, Grace reveals to Abi that she saw everything.
Jackie is angry with Ian when he suggests they move to live on a Scottish island. Narinder’s brother arrives at the Wrecker’s Arms and reveals to Ivy the true reason why his sister is in Polnarren.
Susan tries to talk to Dan after the DNA test results but he cannot trust her anymore. Meanwhile, Mark finds himself in a predicament when Angela puts pressure on him to confess their affair to Susan.
EPISODE TEN
Mark receives an unexpected surprise in the post which sends him into a raging search to find Angela. Angela gives Mark an ultimatum: to tell Susan before eight o’clock or she will reveal all. Mark panics as the clock ticks and Angela’s threat seems more real than ever.
Grace teases Jimmy about his precious date and reminds Abi that her secret is safe with her. Abi is haunted with images of her night with Charlie when she re-visits the beach hut with Jimmy.
Susan, having decided to move on with life and enjoy her family to the full, finds closure with Dan. They agree to move on with their lives while echoes of the past are retraced on the beach between Abi and Jimmy, who are falling deeper in love with one another.
As Brae seeks love life advice from Dan, Ian tries to make up with Jackie by getting a new job locally. Mark is convinced that Angela is bluffing with her threat but at eight o’clock there is a visitor at the Penwarden house.
EPISODE ELEVEN
Mark is furious with Angela for coming round to the house as he is tired of her mind games. But Angela is determined that Susan should know the truth, and that she and Mark should be together.
Susan cooks Mark a lovely romantic lunch but gets suspicious when Mark’s mobile rings and he does not answer.
Its Fin’s birthday and the locals arrange a surprise party for him at Waves. Mark splashes out on a sexy new dress for Susan and is ignorant of her resistance to wear it. An evening of tension unfolds at the party when Ian stands centre stage and proposes to Jackie. Brae holds his breath as Ian waits for Jackie’s answer. Jackie makes her decision and Ian and Brae both now know where they stand.
A drunken Charlie is watched over by Narinder. Abi and Jimmy long to be with one another away from prying eyes. Angela stirs things up between Mark and Susan, letting a key piece of information slip to Susan which further inflames her suspicious about his infidelity. Susan leaves the party, to Marks fury.
Susan calls Dan and they have an emotional heart to heart about the past and what might have been. It’s not too late for them to be together. A furious Mark gets home and realises the extent of what has happened.
