Jimmy Penwarden (Ed Speleers)

Moving Wallpaper and Echo Beach is quite an interesting idea. How would you describe the concept?
"Basically you've got Moving Wallpaper, which is a mockumentary, fly-on-the-wall, The Office-style show about writers and producers putting together a drama called Echo Beach. I steer clear of using the word 'soap'; that's what people are using, but I call it a continuing drama. That obviously has its crossovers with Echo Beach, which actually airs straight afterwards."
And in Echo Beach you play Jimmy Penwarden. What's he like?
"He's alright. He's a bit of a ladies man, into his motorbiking, a man of the beach. But he has this big conflict in the fact that his dad, played by Hugo Speer, is very money-driven and all about success. Jimmy's not really interested in that, he just wants a good lifestyle and good fun. This unravels throughout the series, as relationships develop and relationships fall apart within the families. I think Jimmy also goes through quite a hard time dealing with whether he can get with [Abi] or not. He ends up in a bit of a sorry state."
How was it filming the more racy scenes?
"I wasn't daunted. If you think about it too much it's not going to look natural. The best thing to do is just get on with it, do it, and enjoy what you're doing. This is what you do for a living and you know you're going to come up against sex scenes. By the end of the day you start to feel comfortable. You know the crew aren't up to antics and everyone's on your side."
As you mentioned there are crossovers between the two shows. In the second episode of Moving Wallpaper the executive producer says that your character should put a shirt on because your nipples are "too feminine". Does that bother you?
"As long as people don't dwell on my nipples that's fine. These references are going to be there and that's half the game as well. The only possible fear is whether it's looking like Moving Wallpaper is taking the piss out of Echo Beach. If yes, they wouldn't put the two shows together. Nobody's out to take the piss out of anyone else."

Moving Wallpaper et Echo Beach est une idée super intéressante. Comment pourriez-vous nous décrire le concept ?
"Avant tout, vous avez Moving Wallpaper, qui est un doc-fiction, un peu trash, style Office-show qui parle créateurs et de producteurs qui créent ensemble une série appelée Echo Beach. J’évite d’utiliser le mot « soap”, que les gens utilisent, mais je l’appelle toujours une série. C’était manifestement son cross-over avec Echo Beach, qui expose actuellement directement la suite."
Et dans Echo Beach vous jouer Jimmy Penwarden. Qu’est-ce qu’il aime ?
"Il est bien. Il est un peu un homme à femme, sur sa moto, un homme à la plage. Mais il est en grand conflit avec son père, joué par Hugo Speer, qui est un générateur d’argent et courant après le succès. Jimmy n’est pas vraiment intéressé par tout ça, il veut juste un bon train de vie et s’amuser. Ce qui se dévoile tout au long de la série, c’est les amitiés qui se développent et celles qui s’écroulent entre les familles. Je pense que Jimmy s’assagie vraiment progressivement au fil du temps alors qu’il tente d’être avec Abi ou non. Il finit par en être un peu désolé."
Comment était le tournage, la scène la plus osée ?
"Je n’étais pas intimidé. Si vous y pensez trop, cela ne parait pas naturel. La meilleure façon de faire c’est juste d’être à l’aise, le faire, et profiter du moment. Comme vous le feriez dans la vie et que vous seriez confronté à une scène de sexe. A la fin de la journée, vous vous sentez bien. Vous savez que l’équipe n’est pas dupe et tout le monde est avec vous."
Quand vous avez appris qu’il aurait un cross-overs entre les deux shows. Dans le second épisode de Moving Wallpaper le producteur exécutif dit que ton personnage devrait mettre une chemise parce que tes tétons sont "trop féminins". Est-ce que cela t’as ennuyé ?
"Aussi longtemps que les gens ne penseront pas à mes tétons, c’est bien. Ces références y figurent mais elles font parti du jeu. La seule peur possible est que si c’est vu comme Moving Wallpaper le fait en se foutant d’Echo Beach. Si oui, ils ne mettront pas les deux shows ensemble. Personne ne se fout de personne d’autre."
